When stuffed with a savory filling, the basic burger takes on a whole new dimension. This recipe includes four different fillings to choose from. Two of them call for caramelizing a yellow onion, which is easy to prepare: In a fry pan over medium heat, warm 1 1/2 Tbs. olive oil. Add the chopped onion, cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onion is completely limp, 10 to 15 minutes. Uncover the pan, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring frequently, until the onion is golden brown and sweet, 35 to 45 minutes. Let cool before using.The recipe calls for mixing the ground beef and hamburger seasoning in a large bowl. If desired, you can divide the beef and seasoning between 2 bowls for easier mixing. Be careful not to overmix the ingredients, as this can produce an unpleasantly dense burger.
