Works well for spices too
July 12, 2011
I used the dry blade container this evening to make a cup of dry yellow curry powder. I started the vitamix on the lowest variable setting to break up the cinnamon sticks and star anise. After about 30 seconds, I worked my way up to high and left it for about 45 seconds. In the first round of blending, I had about 3/4 cup of powder that was fine enough to go through an All Clad fine mesh strainer. After two more rounds in the vitamix, I had a full cup of finely ground curry powder.
The vitamix did a great job and clean-up was easy. There is a little discoloration on the plastic from the turmeric, but that's to be expected. So far, the container hasn't absorbed any volatile oils from the cinnamon or cloves, but the company does warn against grinding those items for that reason. So far I've been very happy though - looking forward to trying grains next week.
Pros: Durable, Easy to Use, Quality, Time-saver, Power, Speed, Design, Assembly
Cons: Difficult to Store, Loud

Indian grains & spices
Thank you for your review! Did you find that after grinding the spices & grains, that the "powders" are warm or hot? I want to find a grinder that doesn't heat up the spices/grains during grinding.
Thank you!
