San Francisco Sourdough Starter Kit

Make your own authentic San Francisco-style sourdough bread with our starter kit. We've captured the particular mix of wild yeasts and beneficial lactobacillus bacteria (L. sanfranciscensis) that has made the city's bread so famous. Follow the instructions to activate the starter by periodically adding flour and water, and the natural yeasts and bacteria will get to work on the slow fermentation process that adds the distinctive sour tang and chewy crust prized in sourdough loaves. Use the included covered stoneware crock to keep a portion of the starter refrigerated for your next batch of bread. Our kit includes retro-style stoneware crock, packet of sourdough starter, recipe for Classic San Francisco Sourdough Bread and detailed instructions. Starter can be propagated and stored in refrigerator for future batches of bread. Handmade glazed ceramic crock keeps your starter fresh in the refrigerator, ready for the next batch. Maintained in proper conditions, your starter will last indefinitely. Assembled in USA.

Over a year of trying, little to no success.

To start, the instructions are verbose, not in a helpful, detailed way, but as if someone is rambling and scattered in figuring out how to tell you to proceed.
We've tried following the directions to a T (which can be difficult when ambiguous, at times), and we've also tried variations based upon experience and internet assistance.
Once in a blue moon, the baguette would be decent, but at no point, ever, was there any complexity of flavor or sourdough-ness that would be any better than doing your own basic yeasted, cool-temp, long rise. In fact, our own-recipe breads had far better structure and flavor than this kit ever attained. All in all, fail.
Perhaps we are unlucky in that we are not in the Bay Area where the wonderful wild yeasts run rampant through the air. Perhaps we are doing things all wrong. Perhaps not. We are going back to old school starters that begin from flour, water, a little extra love, and patience.

Not to W-S's normal high standards

Wire on crock would not stay inserted into croc and kept popping out. Croc was significantly smaller in volume than specified in description. This will be returned as soon as completely received
Cons: Size, Assembly, instructions

I was also disappointed with this kit.

I too, am an avid WS shopper. I have rarely been disappointed by a product. But the San Francisco Sourdough Starter Kit was a bust. When I buy WS, I expect the best. I could have found a better version of this product elsewhere and for less money. Better luck next time.

Disappointed

I was so excited to try this and followed the detailed instructions exactly. It was terrible. I will discard and order from someone else. I have always had excellent results from other food items from WS.
