Thanks to a smart multi-sense(TM) system, the lid stays open long enough for you to finish the job, then closes automatically. Made from durable stainless steel and black polypropylene. Sensor on lid detects hand motion directly above and opens lid automatically for truly touchless operation. Once the lid is open, the sensor becomes more sensitive to motion, so the lid won't close before you're finished. After 3 seconds of continued activity, the lid automatically opens wide and switches to a 30-second stay-open mode - good for longer chores. Brushed-stainless-steel finish is fingerprint-proof to resist smudges and wipe clean easily. Replaceable charcoal filter in lid neutralizes odors naturally. Bag-tuck feature hides excess bag. Works Well With One Exception

It is extremely easy to use, and it works well. The only problem is it opens automatically when we walk passed it.

Useless Piece of Junk

First, any product this expensive that doesn't include the batteries necessary to run it is a disgrace. So now, several days after it was delivered, I've finally gone out to Radio Shack to get the necessary C batteries. Did I mention the trash can can't be opened manually so you can't use it until you get those batteries? Right, that's an amazing feature, especially since it usually refuses to open, making a painful mechanical grinding sound. It's a good thing I didn't throw out the old Rubbermaid trash can. This thing will be sent back as soon as possible. I hope I don't have to pay shipping on it.

Love the automatic lid!

I got this because of the lid that opens automatically (and also because it fit in the tight space available.) Love it! SimpleHuman products are always top quality but this extra benefit is so great! No using one's foot or needing a free hand. Just buy it!
