Wow – after reading rmel’s “takes an engineer” comments I had second thoughts about getting the mash and puree kit for my Magimix 5200XL. But I’m glad I went ahead and bought it! The "Description" page of the manual shows two drive shafts assembled with the “caps” in place, and my kit came with the two shafts already assembled. Best of all, it worked just fine and made great mashed potatoes on my first try! I think rmel took the shaft apart and then forgot to reassemble it before using the kit.

Thanks to really misleading directions, it's taken almost six months to figure this out. The kit doesn't mention that it comes with the two drive shafts and a cover for the drive shaft--when you read the directions it only indicates you need the drive shaft--guess what, that mysterious little cap is needed to activate the gears--the only place the cap even appears is on the photo showing how to clean the parts--had a long talk with the supervisor with William Sonoma who was going to send me a new kit and I was packing everything up and saw the cap--thought since I had figured out that the gears needed some sort of friction to keep them running I'd try it and voila, it worked. Next step is to see if it actually works with fruits and veggies, Meanwhile, the recipes in the direction book are fabulous and can be made with an old fashioned hand mill,
