Williams-Sonoma Ground Sumac

This tangy spice powder is made from the ground, berry-like fruits of the sumac bush, which grows wild throughout the Middle East and in parts of the Mediterranean. Notable for its pleasantly fruity, astringent flavor and slightly salty aftertaste, ground sumac complements meat, seafood and vegetables. A fruity, reddish-purple spice powder with natural hints of tangy citrus and savory salt. A classic Middle Eastern seasoning, sumac also plays a spicy role in North African cooking. Use to season marinades or as a rub for grilled beef, lamb or chicken. Sprinkle this tangy, refreshing spice over hummus, baba ganouj or fattoush salad. This premium, all-natural spice is sourced from Turkey by a family-owned artisanal spice company in Northern California's Napa Valley. 1.8 oz. Product of Turkey.

Just like childhood

I'm armenian and was very excited when I saw that WS was carrying sumac now. I have bags from local middle eastern vendors, but feel that WS's puts the others to shame. I've gone through 3 containers worth and am in need of purchasing a 4th. I just wish that they sold it in a larger quantity.
Pros: Quality
Cons: Amount

Great for bread dip seasoning
October 23, 2011
Sumac is a spice that many Americans may not be familiar with, but it is a worthwhile investment for the adventurous cook. Try it mixed with high quality olive oil and the crushed alleppo pepper that you can find on this website for a truly delicious french bread dip. Because of its lemony flavor, sumac is also tasty on anything with spinach, such as pizza, spinach dip, etc.
Pros: Easy to Prepare, Authentic, Quality, Good for Entertaining, Flavor

Pale, by comparison
January 2, 2011
I'm almost a total fan of everything Williams-Sonoma, except for this sumac. It is pale by comparison to sumac powder purchased in Armenian or Greek stores.

One of my favorite spices
October 26, 2010
I love this spice. I use Sumac on everything. Try it on grilled meats, chicken and fish. Sprinkle on your salads or use a pinch in soups. It can be hard to find so I was very pleased to see Williams-Sonoma carries it.
