This made an excellent stew. To save time, I bought some quality cubed stewing beef from the butcher shop. (Don't ever buy stewing beef from the grocery store though ...its terrible and chewy.) I then used baby carrots, and chopped onion from the produce section. All I had to do was fry up the bacon. I served it over mashed potatoes with some nice crusty bread. So good. I would definitely buy this one again.

We used the base for our beef bourguignonne, and the outcome was honestly the best we have ever tasted, even better than my own from-scratch. Very deep, rich taste---a genuine enhancement to the dish. What a pleasure, and so easy.

This sauce made a wonderful Beef Bourguignonne. I did add some fresh sauteed mushrooms and used fresh pearl onions, not frozen. Will definitely buy this again.

I was hoping for the positive result reported by some reviewers, but came to the same conclusion others have reported about a strong taste of vinegar. I followed the stovetop method of preparation as outlined on the jar label.

I recently purchased my first Le Creuset round casserole with lid. It was recommended to me to try the Beef Bourguignonne Braising Base as my first dish. Oh my dear this was a fabulous dish and we wanted to lick the casserole clean. I'm now excited to try other base sauce for maybe a chicken dish. Its alittle pricey for my budget but I hope to try one every month.

Do Not Bother With this Starter!

Having had some good luck with other Williams Sonoma starters, I ordered this in anticipation that it would be a savory time saver. This product was marginal at best. It was not savory nor particularly tasty. It had a very strong vinegar taste and it did not have that complex rich taste that bouruignonne should have. Do yourself a favor and pass on this product. Make it from scratch and you will be much happier. By the time I had worked to thicken the sauce, add more mushrooms, wine, demi glace and kitchen bouquet why didn't I just follow my own recipe? This product is a loser!!!

Strong flavor but delicious

I agree with the reviewers that it has a strong flavor and smell. I used a can of organic tomato sauce and 1/4 of the jar. My beef stew made with 2 lbs of cubed meat came out amazing! I cannot imagine only using this sauce alone, it would be far too rich for most people, myself included!

Overpowering Vinegar taste/smell

I usually make Beef Bourguignon from scratch but received this for Christmas so thought I'd give it a go. It had an overpowering vinegar smell and taste that just got worse as it cooked. My two dinner companions agreed so I know it wasn't just me. Either I got a bad batch or the positive reviewers here have never had a proper Bourguignon. And to those touting it as a time/money saver..it really isn't. A decent crock pot Bourguignon recipe even using a bottle of $5 Cab is far superior in taste and takes the same amount of time to prepare.

I first tried this last year. Both of my kids bdays are in Dec & I was looking for a 'one pot' dish to make. I had about 15 Family members coming (3 sets of grandparents, close friends, my sisters - all adults). Used 2 jars for the party. EVERYONE LOVED IT! It was delicious! Even my kids liked it. I served over egg noodles. My mom, MIL, my step MIL, & my friend all visited Williams Sonoma after the bday party to get a jar. I'm a left over snob, meaning I just don't like reheated food - I hardly ever eat left overs - this I will eat every bit of. I've made it several times since the bday party last year & I will keep making it. I gave jars of this as gifts this year since everyone loved it I put a basket together of a jar of this base and other Williams Sonoma items such as a desert or kitchen gadget - turned out to be great gifts for those that are hard to buy for and they loved it!

I have made this many times and always have guests over for the meal. I love serving this as the directions state and everyone loves this dish! My friends from South Africa were the last guests over for dinner and they both were delighted at the flavor of this dish...not one drop of food was left on their plates! Yum Yum!

This was bitter-tasting and not at all like the description. I was surprised by the sodium amount per serving - 1/2 cup contains 550 mg.There was a pronounced vinegar taste with lack of red wine taste. Will not purchase this again.

I use it often but not for beef bourguignone... Rather for succulent short ribs or roast. It has an amazing flavor and aroma that fills the kitchen. I also have the cast iron crock pot from WS which Ii also love. I braise the short ribs or roast, once done add the sauce, cover and let it slow cook all day. The sauce is a great compliment for egg noodles or mashed potatoes.... Cornbread to clean your plate. Just add a great salad and you have an easy meal from your crock pot"

I love this base and have bought it over and over again. While I love to cook, I do not always have the time to make a fabulous dinner on a weeknight. This product makes that possible for me. Initially, I thought it was pricey, but when you figure in the amount of red wine required of a scratch recipe, it is actually a bargain. I always have a jar in my pantry. Just delicious in every way and a snap to prepare.

I have never cooked Beef Bourguignonne from scratch. So,I thought I would try this quick method to see if I was willing to make it from scratch. I wanted to like it, but the vinegar is so overpowering. Usually. I will serve leftovers but after sitting another day it wasn't worth wasting the calories to eat. I think for the price it should be awesome, this was not. Not to mention the money I wasted on perfectly good meat. I wouldn't buy this again.

Delicious and so easy. Great to make in the fall or winter when you are craving comfort food. I gave a jar to a friend and told her to use it for a dinner party. Will definitely continue to use this braising sauce as well as the Yankee Pot Roast which is equally as delicious - and easy!

I was shocked to see the few negative reviews of this sauce. I thought it was absolutely amazing. I couldn't stop lifting the lid of the slow cooker just to smell it! Excellent sauce, I highly recommend it!
