Australian Big Chop Rectangular Slant Board

Our beautiful handmade board shows off a distinctive combination of three iconic Australian woods, highlighted by angled sides that highlight the grain and double as carrying handles. The eye-catching board makes a great kitchen chopping block, or put it to work serving your favorite party foods. Use the board for everyday chopping tasks or as an impressive presentation piece for cheeses, charcuterie, antipasti or a selection of appetizers. Each Tasmanian wood adds a distinctive grain and coloration, ranging from light golden brown to deep brown, including the black-streaked reddish hue of blackwood and the rich red, brown and orange tones of myrtle and oak. Angled sides make the fully laden board easy to carry. Natural variations in the woods ensure that no two boards are alike. Made in Australia using native Tasmanian timbers - all responsibly harvested. 18" x 12 1/4" x 1" thick; 7 lb. 5 oz. A Williams-Sonoma exclusive.

Pretty, but not functional
January 7, 2014
I received this beautiful cutting board as a gift but immediately had to return it as is had a warp in it. Wanting the same board, I tested all of the ones they had in stock and found one without a warp.
After a few months of minimal use and great care, the board has split between the lighter and darker wood and now has a warp in it. The light coloured wood is also very soft and I would pick up slivers of wood when cutting on it.
Although it is absolutely gorgeous, I would not recommend it as a functional cutting board. It would be a great cheese board though. Thankfully, the great return policy by Williams Sonoma means that I was able to return it for a different kind of board.
The care instructions that come with the board state that you should season it with vegetable oil. Do not do this, as it will likey turn rancid in the board and smell. When I pointed this out to a William Sonoma rep, they were astonished that those instructions would be on the care card.
Pros: beautiful
Cons: warping, soft wood, splinters

The cutting board was a gift from my spouse, so that I would stop yelling at them for leaving our other cutting boards in the sink with water. This was to be my personal board.
I can guarantee that the board was NEVER submerged in water while I had it.
Tree Spirit Mineral Oil was purchased at Williams-Sonoma and used exclusively on the board.
I believe the wood is too soft to use as a cutting board and that is why the wood had splinters. As for the splitting, I have no idea why. But since it took me going through about 10 of the cutting boards at the store before I found one that didn't have an existing warp, I would guess that they are just poorly made.

I'm wondering if you let it soak in soapy dishwater ALL NIGHT or for just a few hours to get the wood to split. I'm certain Williams-Sonoma was able to eventually win you over. Boos chopping block oil only on wood cutting boards.

What a great piece!!

I live in NYC and love entertaining and also love beautiful timber. When I saw the gorgeous combination of Tasmanian timbers in The Big Chop slant board plus the added bonus of angled ends to allow me to carry the board like a tray I had to buy one. I have not been disappointed and besides cutting on it occasionally I mainly use it to present tapas or antipasto on it when I entertain. My friends always comment on it's beauty. 5 stars from me!
